Allahabad Bar Association criticizes Justice Yashwant Varma's swear-in, says "darkest day for India's judiciary" to boycott decision
Digital Desk: The Allahabad Bar Association president strongly criticized the transfer of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad High Court on Friday, calling it the "darkest day for India's judiciary" and announcing a boycott of his swearing-in ceremony.
The Law Ministry announced Justice Varma's transfer on Friday, days after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his repatriation to the Allahabad High Court amid allegations that a large amount of cash was recovered at his residence following a fire. The Supreme Court Collegium announced its recommendation on Monday.
The Allahabad High Court lawyers have been on strike since the next day, with Friday marking the fourth day of protest over the transfer.
Anil Tiwari, head of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association, has indicated that the association will boycott the swearing-in ceremony for the government's transfer notification. The strike may take different forms, but the fight will continue.
Tiwari believes the government will intervene and has summoned an emergency meeting with senior activists to discuss their future steps. He said that the transfer was unfair and that the Allahabad High Court had been transformed into a dumping site.
