CJI Sanjiv Khanna names justice BR Gavai as his successor

Digital Desk: On Wednesday, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna recommended Justice BR Gavai to be appointed as the next CJI to the Union Law Ministry. Justice Bhushan Ram Krishna Gavai will take the oath as the next Chief Justice of India on May 14.

On the same day, incumbent Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna will retire from service.

As per tradition, CJI Sanjiv Khanna has sent a proposal to the Union Law Ministry, naming Justice Gavai as his successor.

Justice Gavai, who is from Amravati in Maharashtra, was appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and a permanent judge in 2005.

Justice BR Gavai recently led a Supreme Court delegation to strife-torn Manipur.
