IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Celebration for Captain Shubman Gill; Break Records with Double Centurions

Digital Desk: A historic score of 269 runs scored by Indian skipper Shubman Gill during the 2nd test series against India vs. England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Gill took 311 deliveries to score his double hundred, joining MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni as Indian captains with double hundreds.

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh also lauded Gill on his big achievement; see here:

Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka set the previous high of 193 at Lord's in 2011. The skipper also achieved the best individual score by an Indian batter on English soil, beating Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at the Oval in 1979. Dravid came close to winning at the same venue in 2002 but was defeated on 217.

Moreover, several records were broken by the Indian Cricket prince on 4th July; have a look here-

- Shubman Gill's score of 269 in the second Test against England at Edgbaston is the highest by an Indian skipper in Tests, surpassing Virat Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019.

- Gill's 269 is also the greatest score by an Indian batsman in Tests outside Asia, with Sachin Tendulkar's 241 not out at the SCG in 2004 being the previous high.

- The third-best score by an Indian batsman in away Tests, after only Virender Sehwag's 309 in Multan and Rahul Dravid's 270 in Rawalpindi during the 2004 tour of Pakistan.

- Before him, only two Indians had scored double-tons in men's Tests in England: Sunil Gavaskar (221 in 1979) and Rahul Dravid (217 in 2002), both at The Oval.

- Gill's 269 is India's seventh-highest Test score overall.

- Gill's control percentage at Edgbaston was 93.28 during his 269-run score. Only two batters have scored a hundred runs in men's Test matches in England since 2006, according to ball-by-ball logs from ESPNcricinfo: Ian Bell, who scored 96.45% in 2011 when he hit 119* against Sri Lanka, and Jamie Smith, who scored 94.6% in 2011 when he hit 111 against Sri Lanka.

- Before Gill, two visiting batsmen scored double hundreds in Test matches at Edgbaston. Zaheer Abbas scored 274 in 1971, and Graeme Smith scored 277 in 2003. In England's Test matches, Gill's 269 is the eighth-highest score by a visiting hitter.

- With 7 batters, Gill is one of several hitters who have scored hundreds in their first two Test matches as captain. Indians Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli made up three of the previous six. The others are Steven Smith, Alastair Cook, and Jackie McGlew.

- Gill, who ranks fifth in both Tests and ODIs, joins a list that is dominated by Indians Chris Gayle, Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar.

Following the illustrious duo of Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid, Gill became the third Indian hitter to reach a double ton in Old Blighty with 21 fours and two sixes.

India dugs up a massive run scoreboard for the rivals, as now England is trailing by 510 runs, with 77 runs and three wickets falling on the 2nd day.
