MLA spitting Paan masala inside Assembly hall causes wide uproar, Speaker announces ban on Gutkha prompt actions

Digital Desk: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly outlawed any consumption of gutkha inside its premises on Wednesday, following outrage over an MLA's uncivilized conduct of spitting pan masala on a carpet in the hall.

In addition to the prohibition, which is effective immediately, violators will also face a Rs 1,000 punishment.

Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana announced the ban a day after informing the Assembly that he had the carpet cleaned in response to an unidentified legislator's act.

"I watched the MLA on video. But I do not want to disgrace anyone. So I'm not taking their names. I urge all members to stop anyone who is doing this. It is our job to keep this assembly clean. It would be great if the MLA in issue came forward and admitted to doing this. Otherwise, I will summon the individual," he stated to the House on Tuesday during the ongoing Budget Session.

Later in the day, while speaking with news agency ANI, Mahana emphasized the importance of the Assembly's image, which is not only for its 403 MLAs but for the 25 crore people of the state".

A video of the Speaker supervising the cleaning of the spit stain has gone viral, with him stating that he noticed it while entering the hall for proceedings.

He urged them to find out who did it and take the money to replace and clean the carpet from the individual. The Speaker emphasized that the Assembly belonged to the people of Uttar Pradesh, not an individual.
