Mamata Banerjee Government faces major setback after SC Rules to Sack 25,000 Teachers
Digital Desk: The Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court ruling, canceling the employment of more than 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff under the West Bengal School Service Commission, handing the Mamata Banerjee government a major setback.
The Supreme Court stated that the entire selection process is "vitiated by manipulation and fraud," with its credibility and legitimacy "denuded."
The panel of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar stated that there was no need to interfere with the High Court ruling. The court ruled that the appointments were the product of deceit and hence fraudulent.
The court directed the state governance to conduct a new selection procedure within three months.
Moreover, those who pass this new process will not be asked to refund the money they received since their appointment in 2016. But those who do not must repay. The court has granted relief to people with disabilities, allowing them to continue in their current position.
The Mamata Banerjee administration had appealed the high court ruling to the Supreme Court, arguing for the separation of implicated and unaltered candidates.
The state administration has been accused of establishing supernumerary positions and illegally recruiting over 23 lakh individuals for the 2016 state-level selection test.
Several key politicians, including former education minister and Mamata Banerjee's loyal lieutenant, have been imprisoned as a result of teacher recruitment violations.
The Supreme Court decision has been dubbed a "crushing defeat" for Mamata Banerjee, who has been deemed responsible for the scandal. Amid all these unfolding incidents, Amit Malviya, a senior BJP leader, has asked for the Chief Minister's accountability and trial for his role in the fraud.
