Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) is an initiative to maintain cooperation with IOR nations in accordance with India's vision of Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions (MAHASAGAR).
In March 2024, the Defence Minister inaugurated a number of infrastructural projects at this strategically positioned base, which are being created with India's long-term security interests in the Indian Ocean in mind.
It is to be mentioned that the first phase of Project Seabird, designed to accommodate ten ships, was completed in 2011. The infrastructure included a breakwater, pier, ship lift, dry berth, repair yard, logistics, storage, and accommodations. Phase IIA, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security, included berthing 32 ships, submarines, and 23 yardcraft.
