PM Modi's response after massive earthquake jolts Myanmar, Thailand; says 'India ready to assist'
Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over two back-to-back earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 that devastated Myanmar earlier today, extending help and sending prayers "for the safety and well-being of everyone."
Here's what he said on X, "Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand."
The earthquake, which occurred at 12:50 p.m. local time, was felt far away, with powerful aftershocks reported in India, China, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
The epicenter was 16 kilometers northwest of the Burmese city of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
As the tremors were felt 900 kilometers away in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared a state of emergency following a meeting to assess the damage caused by the powerful quakes.
Several recordings captured horrific footage of people fleeing buildings and shopping malls in panic as the structures shook violently.
