Telangana: Several workers are likely trapped after a tunnel collapsed on Saturday
Digital Desk: In major breaking news, a part of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Telangana on Saturday, leaving several workers trapped. According to the authorities, the building firm has sent an assessment team inside to gather further information. The collapse occurred on a section of the tunnel behind the Srisailam dam on the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) in Nagarkurnool district, which is currently being developed, officials stated.
"A portion of the SLBC tunnel behind the Srisailam dam near Domalapenta experienced a collapse on Saturday. In particular, at the 14th km point, the roof of the left-side tunnel collapsed for three meters. This happened when employees were performing their duties at the site," according to an official statement.
The statement further stated that the tunnel had only reopened four days earlier.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed shock over the tragedy in an online post, and while he stated that multiple persons were hurt in the fall, he did not provide specific figures.
According to reports, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar and other department officials have taken a special chopper to the accident site.
According to Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Gaikwad, roughly three meters of the tunnel's ceiling collapsed near the Srisailam reservoir as workers were performing routine maintenance, the Indian Express reported. The incident occurred about 14 kilometres inside the tunnel, making instant assessment impossible.
Two rescue crews from the irrigation firm entered the tunnel to assess the situation.
