Digital Desk: Big news for Assam! Guwahati will become the northeast region's first Test cricket location, hosting a match between India and South Africa in November, BCCI general secretary Devajit Saikia announced on Sunday, March 23.
He also announced that the city will host its maiden World Cup match later this year, during the ICC Women's ODI World Cup. "Guwahati will be on the Test cricket map," Saikia stated in his statement.
"No test or World Cup matches have been played in Guwahati thus far. However, as per the decision made at the BCCI apex council meeting on Saturday, Guwahati will host both of those matches this year," Saikia stated.
He announced that the second of the two-Test series between India and South Africa will begin on November 22 at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium.
The ACA Stadium will also host five to six ICC Women's ODI World Cup matches, the first of which will be played in the northeast, according to Saikia.
"The Women's World Cup will be held from September 24 to November 2. The timetable is currently being finalized. Guwahati has been chosen as one of the venues," Saikia stated.
Former ACA general secretary Saikia also thanked ICC Chairman Jay Shah and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their contributions to Guwahati's emergence as a favored cricket site.
