Mizoram's ruling Zoram People's Movement wins village local council elections

 

Digital Desk: Mizoram's ruling party, the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), won the village council (VC) and local council (LC) elections with a dominating majority.

The ZPM won 266 of the 543 VCs and 54 of the 110 LCs, according to the final results issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) on February 13.

The Congress won 43 VCs and 14 LCs, while the BJP received one VC. There were also seven VCs and two LCs, with exclusively independent candidates elected.

The SEC found that there was no clear majority in 104 village councils and 13 municipal councils.

According to the SEC, ZPM won 1,153 seats out of 543 VCs, followed by MNF with 744 seats, Congress (406), BJP (17), Hmar People's Convention (4), and independents (87).

The ruling party won 363 seats in the 110 LCs, followed by MNF (197), Congress (147), and independents (11), according to the report.

Polling for the 534 village councils in nine districts, except three Autonomous District Councils (ADC) in two districts and 110 local councils inside Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), was held peacefully on Wednesday, according to the commission.

According to the report, over 75% of over 4.4 lakh voters voted in the VC polls, while 64.79 percent voted in the LC polls.
