Peace In Progress: Assam & Meghalaya Likely To Seal Second Border Deal Before 15 August
Digital Desk: In a hopeful sign for long-standing peace efforts, Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh has started the second phase of the Assam-Meghalaya border agreement, likely to be signed before August 15. This follows two years after the first MoU, signed in 2022, which successfully resolved disputes in six of twelve identified areas of conflict along the interstate border.
Lyngdoh stated to PTI “This is a significant step forward. The inclusion of these villages reflects continued engagement and negotiation with the Assam government.'' bringing five villages in the disputed Block II area of Ri-Bhoi district under Meghalaya's administration.
Highlighting progress in other sectors, Lyngdoh stated that a final resolution in the Langpih sector is within reach, subject to a joint inspection by border committees. "We are awaiting a confirmation from our Assam counterpart headed by Mr. Patowary," the minister stated.
The announcement comes amid recent border tensions, particularly in the West Jaintia Hills, where locals from Lapangap reportedly abolished tree plantations carried out by Assam's Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council. The Meghalaya government has now assigned a police team to keep law and order in the region.
If signed on time, the pact could mark a significant leap in easing inter-state tension, ensuring stability in the Northeast region-- right in time to celebrate the spirit of independence.
