Praggnanandhaa Defeats World No.1 Magnus Carlsen Again at Norway Chess

 

Digital Desk: Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa achieved a remarkable feat by defeating World No.1 Magnus Carlsen for the second time in the ongoing Norway Chess tournament.

His victory on June 2, 2026, in the eighth round, was accomplished with the black pieces in a classical game, propelling Praggnanandhaa to third place with 12 points, just two points behind leader Wesley So. Alireza Firouza is currently in second place with 13 points, having defeated World champion D. Gukesh, who suffered his third loss in the tournament.


In a thrilling tournament, Praggnanandhaa outplayed Vincent Keymer in the Armageddon round after their classical match ended in a stalemate. Expressing his satisfaction, Praggnanandhaa emphasized the importance of the win for the tournament, stating, “It’s more important for the tournament that I get this win than thinking that it’s Magnus.”

Praggnanandhaa's recent victory marks a significant achievement, as he becomes one of the rare players to defeat the 35-year-old Magnus Carlsen three times in classical chess.
