Assam: Voting for first phase of panchayat polls begins
Digital Desk: Voters are turning out in force early Friday morning for the first phase of the Assam panchayat elections, which cover 14 districts. Reports of long lines outside polling places indicate that the people are involved in the grassroots democracy process.
Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi are among the districts that will cast ballots in this phase.
The Assam State Election Commission certified that all required arrangements were made to ensure a peaceful and fair election. More than 1.20 lakh voting staff have been deployed, with security forces stationed at each polling booth.
Over 1.80 crore electors are eligible to vote in two phases at 25,007 polling places. This includes about 90.71 lakh male voters, 89.65 lakh female voters, and 408 people in the "others" category.
Even before the election began, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had established a considerable early lead. The NDA won 37 Zila Parishad seats unopposed, 35 for the BJP and two for its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). It also won 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats unchallenged (259 by the BJP and 29 by the AGP).
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is optimistic about the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) performance, claiming that the NDA won 37 Zila Parishad and 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats unchallenged, a significant mandate in Assam's political history.
The NDA is anticipated to win the Assam Panchayat elections, representing the rural political mood ahead of future polls.
The second phase of the Panchayat Election will begin on May 7 in the remaining 13 districts. Vote counting will take place on May 11.
