Action against illegal migrants to continue: Assam CM
Digital Desk: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government has stepped up efforts to push back illegal migrants, targeting both fresh infiltrations and those residing in the state post-1971.
Speaking on the issue, CM Sarma stated that the drive is being carried out under the provisions of the Immigrants Expulsion from Assam Act, which empowers the state to expel foreigners who entered Assam after 1971.
He said that pushbacks are happening on two fronts—those who are trying to enter Assam now and those who have been living in the state illegally since 1971.
CM Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguard the state’s demographic and cultural identity.
The Assam chief minister stressed that the action against illegal migrants is being implemented with determination.
CM Sarma asserted that eviction drives against illegal encroachers in the state will continue, while also hinting at further steps regarding the NRC.
Speaking about recent criticism from activists and groups opposing the drives, Sarma said that certain individuals, including social activist Harsh Mander and others linked to past protests, such as Shaheen Bagh, have been visiting Assam in recent weeks.
CM Sarma maintained that while such activists may oppose the BJP, their efforts would not succeed.
The Assam chief minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continue the eviction drives.
Sarma further stressed that his government would oppose any attempt to alter Assam’s cultural identity.
