Statewide 'Satyagraha' to be held by AASU opposing illegal immigration
Digital Desk: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has announced a "Satyagraha" campaign from September 4 to September 23, aiming to remove illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and address the state's illegal infiltration problem.
The campaign will begin with an 11-hour hunger strike at district headquarters, followed by protest demonstrations on September 16, human chain formations in regional units on September 20, and large rallies at each district headquarters on September 23.
The student body stressed demands for Assam's deportation of illegal immigrants, full implementation of the Assam Accord, and complete border sealing, including a "shoot-at-sight" order against unlawful border crossings.
AASU secretary Utpal Sarma questioned, "If the Assam Accord had been executed and migrants who arrived after 1971 had been expelled, today's situation would not have occurred. These illegal migrants have encroached on tribal belts and blocks, seized agricultural land, taken over satra (Vaishnavite monastery) holdings, and invaded forest regions, depriving indigenous Assamese people of their political rights."
AASU Chief Advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya stated that even if constitutional amendments are required, the indigenous people of Assam must be provided with constitutional safeguards.
He also stated that AASU would closely monitor the government's actions regarding border sealing and deportation of foreign nationals.
"Assam has made sacrifices for this cause, and we cannot continue to wait for the Prime Minister's response." We demand immediate decisions and action. Bhattacharya claimed that both the federal and state governments failed to seal the 268-kilometer border with Bangladesh.
