Assam: Eviction Drive at Goalpara; over 600 homes in 1500 bighas of land ousted

Digital Desk: The Goalpara district council launched a large-scale eviction effort on Monday morning to retrieve around 1,500 bighas of government land that had been encroached upon in the Hasila Beel area.

The operation, led by the civil administration and fully supported by the police, aims to clear 667 illegally occupied dwellings as well as different unauthorized buildings.

According to government sources, the encroached land also includes five schools and a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project, which have been operating illegally on public property.

Officials indicated that the eviction is part of a larger campaign to reclaim encroached government land for outreach services and sustainable development.

It is to be mentioned that, before the eviction, notices were duly provided to all illegal inhabitants, and public announcements were made via banners and loudspeakers, requesting residents to depart the premises by June 15, 2025.

Despite the warnings, several structures—including houses, boundary walls, stores, buildings, and even private water pipelines and bore wells—are still on the site. These are presently scheduled for demolition as part of the ongoing process.

Goalpara Police have made substantial security arrangements to preserve law and order during the drive and avoid any untoward incidents.
