Assam Panchayat Elections 2025: Over 8 percent voter turnout recorded in first 2 hours of polling
Digital Desk: During the first two hours of panchayat polling in Assam on Friday, an estimated 8.47 percent of the electorate exercised their franchise, according to officials.
Voting began at 7:30 a.m. and will continue until 4.30 p.m. in 14 districts around the state, with no reports of any unpleasant incidents thus far, officials said.
The first phase of voting is taking place in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi districts.
Lakhimpur had the highest polling rate at 14 percent, while Dibrugarh had the lowest at 7 percent. Officials said that reports from Majuli and Hailakandi had yet to arrive.
In the first phase, around 89.59 lakh persons, comprising 44.66 lakh men and 44.93 lakh females, are eligible to vote at 12,916 polling stations.
There are 216 zilla parishads, 94 anchalik panchayats, and 1,139 gaon panchayats in the first phase of the election.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged voters to use their rights to develop democracy at the grassroots level.

The second phase of panchayat elections in Assam will be held on May 7 in various districts. The first phase will take place on May 4, and the second phase on May 9. Vote counting will take place on May 11.
The ruling NDA won 325 uncontested seats, including 348 zila parishads and 288 anchalik panchayats. Independents have won 15 anchalik parishad seats, Congress nine, and the AIUDF has one uncontested seat.
