Boosting biodiversity; Assam Cabinet approves reserve forest status for Goalpara wetlands

Digital Desk: On Sunday, June 22, the Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved several historic decisions about welfare reforms, economic development, social inclusion, and environmental preservation.

The Cabinet's agreement to designate two notable wetlands in the Goalpara district, Urpad Beel (1,256 hectares) and Hasila Beel (245 hectares), as Proposed Reserve Forests (PRFs) under Section 5 of the Assam Forest Regulation, 1891, was one of the most important decisions.

These wetlands are rich in biodiversity and environmentally fragile. Before the notification is finalized, the public will have a month to offer recommendations, CM Sarma stated at a news conference.

The "Assam Industrial and Green Growth Fund," a Rs 3,000 crore SEBI-registered alternate investment fund with an anchor investment of ₹500 crore, was established with Cabinet approval to support sustainable development. This fund aims to allocate long-term funds to priority start-ups, MSMEs, agro-tech, green infrastructure, renewable energy, and tourism sectors.
