Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall warning: Assam and Meghalaya under Red Alert
Digital Desk: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a 'red alert' for Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday, warning of exceptionally heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next two days.
The alert will stay in effect on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a 'orange alert' on Friday, indicating that bad weather conditions will persist.
The warning, which is based on information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has prompted both states to take preventive measures to protect public safety.
In a statement, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) asked inhabitants, particularly those living in low-lying or landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant, avoid needless travel, and stock up on supplies like medicines and candles.
According to ASDMA, isolated locations in many districts may receive very severe to extremely high rainfall, resulting in waterlogging, traffic interruption, and an increased risk of localized landslides.
Authorities have been instructed to keep emergency response systems on high alert and to closely monitor sensitive areas.
